Welcome to 2011 and the 24th year of the Thunderhead Fantasy Football League. Congratulations to the Fleshy Dangles and owner Jim Trepinski for winning the 2011 Thunderhead Fantasy Football League Championship when they defeated the Firebirds and owner Pete Gaalswijk 49-36 in Fantasy Bowl 24 while the Victorious Secret and owner Jake Mozney got the toilet prize for finishing last in a 1 point loss to the Turbines and Fast Eddie Edelman in the Beer Bowl.
2011 Thunderhead Fantasy Football League Championship game #6 Fleshy Dangles 49, #1 Firebirds 36 The Jim Trepinski owned Fleshy Dangles completed an impressive run to the 2011 Thunderhead Fantasy Football League Championship when they outslugged the top seeded Firebirds 49-36. Unlike their quarterfinal fin against the Gravity Storm, The Dangles led the title game right from the start and never let the top seeded Firebirds get in the game. The Dangles jumped on top on Thursday night when Arian Foster scored 9 for a 9-0 lead going to the weekend. The Dangles had 4 more players going in the early games on Saturday while the Firebirds had only 2 of their 7 players in action. The Dangles continued to get scoring from almost everyone as Maurice Jones-Drew got 9, Brandon Marshall had 9 and the Giants defense had 10 and only Plaxico Burress went scoreless for the Dangles so 4 of their first 5 players scored at lead 9. In fact, Burress became the only Dangles starter to not score in the final TWO weeks. The Firebirds did get a big 18 points from Tom Brady (all in the 2nd half of his game) and the Cincy defense had 8 to keep the Firebirds in the game but the Dangles had a 37-26 lead. That didn't sound as secure as it may seem since the Firebirds still had 5 players yet to play while the Dangles had but 2 left. The Afternoon games proved to be the undoing for the Firebirds. As fate would have it, the Firebirds owners favorite team (Dallas) lost thier QB early in their game with the Eagles and their 2nd string was inactive. Instead of the Firebirds getting some good kicker points, they basically got nothing. What made it worse is that the Boys scored a meaningless TD in the last 12 seconds of the game but that actually extended the Dangles lead as they had the boys QB so they got 3 points on that late TD pass while their kicker only got one. In addition, MIke Tolbert got nothing in his game while the Dangles final player, Jason Hanson also got 9 so after the late games on Saturday, the Dangles had a huge 49-27 lead. The Firebirds did have 3 players on Monday night but being down 22 points is a huge deficit to overcome, more then what the Dangles themselves had to do to beat Gravity in the epic first round playoff game. The Dangles got it done in the playoffs in high scoring fashion. They scored 65, 46 and 49 in their 3 playoff games or an average of over 53 pts a game. That is a pretty good recipe for success in any year. That doesn't even consider that if he had gotten max points from his players, his 3 scores would have been 74, 73 and 49!! That is one hot team. Not sure where that stands in history as far as the 3 playoff weeks are concerned but has to be up there in the top couple. The Firebirds themselves, averaged over 45 points a game in the 3 playoff weeks. The Dangles end the season with a 10-5 record while the Firebirds end at a league best 12-4. What ifs: If we had used the previous system of seeding teams based on the combination of points scored and their record, the final 4 would have been the Firebirds, Gravity Storm, Jarrods Jaguars and Fleshy Dangles with the Dangles again winning it all over the Firebirds in the final BUT, if you take away that 1 late sack with 1 minute to go on the Monday night game that allowed the Dangles to get past the Storm 65-64, the Firebirds would be walking around with their 3rd title and the Gravity Storm would have had their 3rd straight runner up finish. Lastly, and to answer Salty Jake's question where the commish helped the Slushheads with a player sub that allowed them to beat Vic Secret which then ended up keeping the Bootleggers out of the show. If that hadn't happened and the Slushmen had not gotten any kicker points, the only thing that changes is the Bootleggers make the show instead of the Slushmen but they lose game one and the Dangles still end up beating the Firebirds in the final. I did look at other scenarios but with two teams scoring points like they did, all ended up with the same two teams in the final. With the win, the Dangles become just the 5th franchise to have 2 championships to their name. Owner Jim Trepinski and his team join the Firebirds, the Red Raiders, the Heatsters and Agents of Fortune as the only teams with multiple titles. For the Firebirds, it was their 6th runner up finish. That is alot of 2nd place finishes. They do have 2 titles to go with that and those came in years 10 and 20 of the league. Congratulations to Jim and his Dangles for taking home the big prize. Beer Bowl Loser title game #2 Turbines 27, #1 Victorious Secret 26 Beer Bowl 24 lived up to the expectation of a close game and for the 3rd time this year, the Turbines beat Victorious Secret 27-26 to avoid finishing last, getting the toilet next to their name next year and having to pay the commish beer money. Those 3 'honors' go to the Jake Mozney owned Victorious Secret, who in his 2nd year in the league fell to depths his father never fell to in 20+ years. The Turbines only won 3 games this year and all were against Lady Secret so they really seem to save their best for the Vic Secrets. The Turbines, or Washington Huskettes as they like to be called, got 13 points from Rob Bironas and 12 from Kevin Smith and improved their record to a sizzling 3-13 while the Less then Victorious Secrets got 12 from Olindo Mare in falling to a league worst 2-14. This is the 4th time the Turbines have finished 15th in the league so they are at least consistent at that. They avoided losing the Beer Bowl for the 2nd time. Vic Secret saw their two year career record fall to 9-23. 3rd Place game Jerry's Kids 42, Beast of the East 41 In another 1 points game, the Jerry's Kids claimed 3rd place when they squeezed past the League's Bridesmaid, the Beast of the East, Graham Gano had 15 and the Det. QB had 12 as the Kids clamied 3rd place in their win over the Beast. The Kids improved to 10-6 while the Beast fell to 10-5-1. The Beast did get 9 points from 3 different players (Tim Tebow, Rashard Mendenhall and Victor Cruz) to keep it very close. 5th Place game Agents of Fortune 38, Jarrods Jaguars 28 The Agents of Fortune claimed the last pay spot in the final standing when they got 5th place in a 10 point win over the Jarrods Jaguars. the Jags got killed when their kicker was a very late scratch and got zero points and left another 8 points on the bench in falling to 9-5-2. The Agents improved to 9-7 and getting the last paying spot. They got 9 points each from CJ Spiller, Megatron and Julio Jones. The Jags did get 15 from Superstar Aaron Rodgers in the loss. 7th Place game Slushheads 31, Gravity Storm 22 Ahmad Bradshaw scored 12 to lead the Slushheads over the Gravity Storm in the 7th place game. The Storm lost all 3 playoff games to finish 7-7-2 on the year while the SLushheads get the one win to finish the playoffs at 1-2 and make it to .500 overall with their 8-8 record. The Storm failed in their attempt to break the all time single season scoring record, ending up with 670 points, good for 3rd all time behind the 2006 Heatsters and 1997 Firebirds. 9th Place game Big Dig Mobsters 38 Beantown Bombers 28 The Big Dig Mobsters swept through the Beer half of the playoffs 3-0 when they defeated the Beantown Bombers 38-28 to end their year at 7-8-1. The Bombers saw their record fall to 8-8 and a final .500 record. Cam Newton had 15 for the Bombers while DeAngelo Williams had 12 for the Mobsters. 11th Place game Heatsters 41, Bootleggers 9 David Akers had 14 and James Jones 12 to allow the Heatsters to make it to .500 for the year at 8-8 in their rout of the Bootleggers. This game had a unusual twist as the Heat and Salty Jake owners had some harsh words for each other before the year started so this probably felt pretty sweet for the Heat. 9 points is all the Bootgirls could muster though they did leave 20 on the bench. The loss dropped the Bootgirls to the same 8-8 record. The win allowed the Heatsters to stay within 1 of the Firebirds in the number of years with at least a .500 record. The Firebirds have the record, having done it 18 times while the Heat is now at 17. 13th Place game Gridsters 41, Red Raiders 16 The Gridsters moved to 6-10 on the year when they routed the Red Raiders behind 11 points from Matt Bryant and 9 from Larry Fitzgerald. The Red Raiders were unsuccesful at getting to .500 for the year and end up at 7-9.
